Samsung to launch a smart speaker in first half of 2018: Report

Samsung BixbyIt seems the South Korean tech giant Samsung is getting ready to join the likes of Google and Amazon by launching its own smart speaker in the market. According to a report in the Bloomberg, the company is planning to introduce a Bixby-powered smart speaker in the first half of 2018.
Samsung’s upcoming smart speaker will reportedly focus on audio-capabilities and smart home devices management, similar to what the most premium smart speakers offer these days. It will use the company’s own voice-assistant Bixby, which is currently offered as a part of select Galaxy smartphones. Although Bixby is a direct competitor to Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, it hasn’t got the best reviews and is probably the worst of the bunch.
Bloomberg also notes that Samsung’s smart speaker will synchronize with Samsung’s other devices like phones and TVs as well as work with the company’s SmartThings platform.
A prototype of the smart speaker in testing by the company is said to be between the size of Amazon Echo and Apple HomePod. It sports matte black colour, however the company may offer the final product in multiple colour options. The prototype doesn’t feature any kind of a screen, but there are lights on the top for visual feedback. No other specifics are known at this point.
The smart speaker may be released in multiple markets around the world with a price-tag around $200, but these plans are fluid at the moment and may change.
Samsung’s plans to release a smart speaker haven’t been a complete surprise. The company executive DJ Koh has revealed in August this year that Samsung is working on a smart speaker without giving out any details.
I hope to hear more about Samsung’s smart speaker plans at the company event in Mobile World Congress next year.

Synaptics unveils in-display fingerprint sensors for smartphones

SynapticsWe have long been hearing about fingerprint sensors embedded in the smartphone’s display and it seems they are finally ready for primetime. Synaptics, a company known for touch sensing, display and biometrics solutions, has announced that it has entered in the mass production of world’s first in-display fingerprint sensors for the smartphones.
In a press release, the company revealed that its new Clear ID FS9500 family of optical in-display fingerprint sensors are faster than alternative biometric solutions like face unlock and provide convenient one-touch/one-step biometric authentication directly in the touchscreen of the phones.
“Consumers prefer fingerprint authentication on the front of the phone, and with the industry quickly shifting to bezel-free OLED infinity displays, the natural placement of the fingerprint sensor is in the display itself,” said Kevin Barber, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile Division, Synaptics, in a statement.
The company adds that the Clear ID is very secure and includes multiple security features to thwart misuse including AI-enabled anti-spoof tech and TLS protocol support with ECC authentication and AES encryption. Clear ID will work no matter you have wet, dry or cold fingers and it is durable and protected by glass.
The company has not shared specifics about when we can expect to see the Clear ID sensors in actual smartphones or which companies are using it, but  I am hoping to hear more at the CES 2018, where Synaptics will be demoing the technology.
If Synaptics Clear ID sensors indeed turn out to be all the company is claiming, they will help the manufacturers in saving key real-estate on the smartphone bodies and allow them to offer even more compact devices.
What are your thought on this new tech? Would you like to see an in-display fingerprint sensor in your next smartphone? Let us know in comments.

Samsung Galaxy S9 unlikely to show up at CES 2018

Samsung Galaxy S9 unlikely to show up at CES 2018
Posted: 08 Dec 2017 12:44 AM PST

Samsung logo

If you remember, @evleaks of VentureBeat reported last month that Samsung is planning to showcase the Galaxy S9 phone at CES 2018, followed by the actual availability in March. Turns out he was wrong. When asked about the S9 unveil at CES, Samsung told the Korea Herald recently that it is unlikely.
While it is not a complete denial, showing off Galaxy S9 at CES and then releasing it two months later just doesn’t make sense. So, when are Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus arriving?
The Korea Herald is reporting that the company will most likely introduce the phone at its own launch event in March or during the Mobile World Congress in February. In the past, Samsung has chosen to take the wraps of a new Galaxy S-series phone four times at MWC and four times at an independent event. So, the both scenarios presented by the Korea Herald have an equal chance.
To remind you, Samsung is rumoured to unveil two main Galaxy S9 phones this year – Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ expected features & specifications

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be sporting an identical design to their predecessors Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, except even slimmer bezels. It is the internal components that will be mainly different in the upcoming smartphones. The S9 phone will carry the model number SM-G960 and a 5.8-inch curved-edge Super AMOLED Infinity display, the S9+ phone will use model number SM-G965 with 6.2-inch curved-edge Super AMOLED Infinity display.
Like the most previous years, the upcoming Galaxy S-series phones will use Qualcomm’s flagship smartphone processor – Snapdragon 845 – in some markets and Samsung’s own flagship Exynos model in the other markets.
Among other rumoured specifications, the S9 phones will keep the 3.5mm audio jack and come with AKG stereo speakers and a fingerprint sensor. The placement of the fingerprint sensor is expected to be below the rear dual cameras.
