Vivo Y75 announced, 5.7-inch screen & 16MP selfie camera in tow


Vivo Y75Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has unveiled a new Android phone ‘Y75’. Currently available in China, the Vivo Y75 is a mid-range smartphone. It carries a price-tag of 1598 yuan ($241).
Vivo Y75 features a 5.7-inch FullView screen with 1440x720p resolution. It is powered by MediaTek Helio P23 octa-core processor and includes 4GB of RAM. The phone also comes with 32GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot with support upto 256GB.
In addition, Vivo has packed a 3000mAh battery in the phone as well as the usual connectivity options like dual-SIM support and 4G LTE. On the imaging front, the Y75 packs a 13MP primary camera on the back with a f2.2 lens and 16MP selfie camera on the front with f2.0 lens. There is a fingerprint sensor as well on the phone.
In terms of the software, the buyers will get Android 7.1 Nougat on-board. According to Vivo, the Y75 is being offered in Matte Black, Gold and Rose Gold colour options.
There is no word on the availability outside China at this point, but traditionally Vivo has released the Y-series phones internationally. So, I am hoping to see the international launch over the coming months.
In related news, it was recently revealed that Vivo will be the first smartphone manufacturer to release a smartphone with in-display fingerprint sensor. The company is using Synaptics’ recently unveiled Clear ID solution.

Google Assistant comes to Android tablets, Android 5.0 phones

Google has announced that it is finally expanding the availability of its digital assistant to Android tablets. Google Assistant has until now been available on smartphones, smartwatches, smart speakers, Android TV and more.
According to the company, Google Assistant will be rolling out to the tablets running Android 7.0 Nougat or 6.0 Marshmallow over the coming week. It will initially only be available in the United States with tablets using English. There is no word on the availability in other markets at this point. Surprisingly, Google has failed to mention anything about the Google Assistant support on Pixel C, which the only Oreo-powered tablet right now. Still, I believe it will get the support with other Nougat or Marshmallow-powered tablets.
In addition to the expansion to the Android tablets, Google has revealed that it is adding the support for Android 5.0 Lollipop smartphones in the Assistant. It is likely that the RAM and display resolution requirements still stand, which means your phone will need to have over 1.4GB of RAM and at least 720p screen resolution.
Google Assistant on Android Lollipop-powered phones will first be available to the users with phone language set to English in the U.S., UK, India, Australia, Canada and Singapore, as well as Spanish in the U.S., Mexico and Spain. It’s also rolling out to users in Italy, Japan, Germany, Brazil and Korea.
To remind you, Google Assistant offers a number of features including the ability to set reminders, play music, make lists, get weather information, control smart home devices, send text or make calls and more.
The Google Assistant will automatically come to eligible Android phones running Lollipop and Android tablets running Marshmallow and Nougat with Google Play Services.

Google adds deals to Google Trips & price tracking to hotel search


Google FlightsWith the end of 2017 fast approaching, many of us are already making travel plans for 2018. In order to aid the likes of us in our flight bookings, hotel search and sightseeing, Google has announced a few new features in its travel-related products.

Google Flights

Starting with Google Flights, the search giant will now offer tips with flight search results. It will show whether the flights in the results are cheaper than usual or whether the prices won’t do down any more for these dates and so on. Google is using machine learning and statistical analysis of historical flights data to suggest these tips.
“A tip would say that “prices are less than normal” and by how much to indicate you’d spotted a deal. Or, if prices tend to remain steady for the date and place you’re searching for, a tip would indicate the price “won’t drop further” based on our price prediction algorithms, wrote Richard Holden, VP of Travel Products at Google, in a blog post.

Hotel Search

Google Hotel SearchSimilar to Google Flights, Google will offer tips with hotel search results about whether the room rates are higher than normal or the city or town is busier because of an event or a conference. Like Las Vegas will be super busy around CES 2018, so if you search for a hotel during those dates, Google will tell you why the room rates are high and you can avoid them by shifting the travel dates just a bit. Also, you can now get price drop alerts by email by opting into Hotel Price Tracking on your phone.

Google Trips

Lastly, the company has introduced a new Discounts feature in the Google Trips app. This feature will allow you to access deals on ticketing for attractions, tours and other activities during your vacation.Google Trips
“No matter where you’re headed (and if you need ideas, read on), Trips makes it easy to browse and access fun stuff to do on your vacation without breaking the bank,” explained Holden in the blog post.
The discounts feature is immediately available in Google Trips via an update.

Vivo will launch the first phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor

Update (Dec 15): While Synaptics had just teased that it is working with a top five OEM, we now know that Vivo is going to be the first company to launch a phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. In a report on Thursday, Forbes contributor Patrick Moorhead revealed that he had a chance to spend time with a pre-production unit of a upcoming Vivo phone with the in-screen fingerprint sensor. No details about this Vivo phone are known at this point, but Moorhead did reveal the current implementation of the in-display fingerprint sensor.

How does it work?

You press the power button. The screen wakes up and shows a fingerprint icon (like in the image above). You put your finger on the icon and it gets authenticated.

Synaptics unveils in-display fingerprint sensors for phones

Dec 12: We have long been hearing about fingerprint sensors embedded in the smartphone’s display and it seems they are finally ready for primetime. Synaptics, a company known for touch sensing, display and biometrics solutions, has announced that it has entered in the mass production of world’s first in-display fingerprint sensors for the smartphones.
In a press release, the company revealed that its new Clear ID FS9500 family of optical in-display fingerprint sensors are faster than alternative biometric solutions like face unlock and provide convenient one-touch/one-step biometric authentication directly in the touchscreen of the phones.
“Consumers prefer fingerprint authentication on the front of the phone, and with the industry quickly shifting to bezel-free OLED infinity displays, the natural placement of the fingerprint sensor is in the display itself,” said Kevin Barber, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile Division, Synaptics, in a statement.
The company adds that the Clear ID is very secure and includes multiple security features to thwart misuse including AI-enabled anti-spoof tech and TLS protocol support with ECC authentication and AES encryption. Clear ID will work no matter you have wet, dry or cold fingers and it is durable and protected by glass.
The company has not shared specifics about when we can expect to see the Clear ID sensors in actual smartphones or which companies are using it, but  I am hoping to hear more at the CES 2018, where Synaptics will be demoing the technology.
If Synaptics Clear ID sensors indeed turn out to be all the company is claiming, they will help the manufacturers in saving key real-estate on the smartphone bodies and allow them to offer even more compact devices.
