Qualcomm is hosting its Snapdragon Technology Summit this week, where the chip maker unveiled its flagship mobile platform for 2018 – the Snapdragon 845. It is now in sampling with the company’s customers including the smartphone makers and will be arriving in the actual devices in early-2018. Xiaomi has already confirmed that it is using the 845 in its next flagship.
According to Qualcomm, the CPU and GPU in the Snapdragon 845 have been reworked from ground-up and offer significant performance improvements over the Snapdragon 835.
“As leaders in mobile technology, we will transform the mobile experience with comprehensive advancements in visual processing, AI, security and connectivity. The Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform is the next horizon of innovation and is going to transform the way people use their mobile devices to make their lives better,” said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president and general manager, mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc, in a statement.

Here are the highlights of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845

  • Based on 2nd-gen 10nm process
  • Includes eight Kryo 385 CPU cores (four high-power and four low-power) and Adreno 630 GPU
  • Each CPU core has a private L2 cache and there is an added L3 cache with 2AIMB memory
  • The high-power cores can be clocked upto 2.8GHz and the low-power can be clocked upto 1.8GHz
  • The high-power cores will provide 25-30% better performance than the cores on Snapdragon 835, the low-power cores will offer 15% better performance.
  • Adreno 630 will offer 30% faster graphics performance
  • Overall Snapdragon 845 is 30% more power-efficient than Snapdragon 835
  • Apart from the CPU cores and GPU, there is Spectra 280 image signal processor (ISP), Hexagon 685 DSP, X20 LTE modem and a secure processing unit.
  • The Spectra 280 makes sure the Snapdragon 845 can capture and play 4K HDR video at 60fps, support HDR 10, slow motion video capture 720p@480fps, upto 32MP cameras, and a lot more
  • Quickcharge 4/ 4+ support, which claims to offer 5 hours of battery life from 5 minutes of charging
  • Bluetooth 5 support
  • 3x improvement in overall AI performance

Since there is pretty much no other premium smartphone chipmaker (except probably Samsung, whose chips are mostly used in its own devices), you can expect to see the Snapdragon 845 is the flagship and premium devices from all Android partners like LG, Sony, Asus, Xiaomi, Google, HTC, ZTE, and Samsung.

Huawei officially unveils  Huawei Mate 10 series with AI, dual cameras and much more


Huawei officially took wraps off the Mate 10 series at an event in Munich, Germany. The Huawei Mate 10 series boasts about being the first smartphones with dedicated AI processing unit built-in.

The Mate 10 series consists of three devices and they are the regular Mate 10, the Mate 10 Pro and the luxurious Mate 10 Porsche Design. The Latter two share same specifications except for the design and memory configurations. The Mate 10 sports a 5.9 inches FullView QHD LCD display with regular 16:9 aspect ratio. Whereas the Pro and the Porsche Design comes with a 6 inches Full View FHD+ OLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The fingerprint sensor is placed below the display on the Mate 10 but it rests on the back for the other two.
Under the hood, the trio is powered by Huawei’s in-house HiSilicon Kirin 970. It is an Octa-core CPU with 4 Cortex A73 cores at 2.36 GHz, 4 Cortex A53 at 1.8 GHZ and a i7 co-processor. It also comes with 12 core Mali-G72 MP12 GPU and a dedicated AI processing unit known as NPU (Neural Processing Unit).The Mate 10 comes with 4GB RAM/64GB ROM, the Pro has 6GB RAM/128GB ROM and the Porsche Design features 6GB RAM/256GB ROM. Further, the trio is backed by a 4000mAh battery with Huawei’s SuperCharge technology for fast charging.
For optics, the trio comes with dual camera setup which includes a 12MP RGB sensor and a 20MP monochrome sensor co-engineered with Leica. Both the sensors have f/1.6 aperture, but OIS is present only in the RGB one. On the front, there is an 8MP shooter for selfies and video calls. The cameras can take bokeh shots, can recognise the subjects without internet connectivity and translate in real time with the help of AI.


The Mate 10 retains the headphone jack and expandable storage but comes with only IP53 certification. On the other hand, the Pro and the Porsche Design eliminates the headphone jack and expandable storage but comes with IP67 certification. The Mate 10 will be available in Mocha Brown, Black, Champagne Gold and Pink Gold color variants. The Pro comes in Midnight Blue, Titanium Gray, Mocha Brown and Pink Gold. The Porsche Design will only come in Diamond Black.
All the three runs on EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo. Finally, the Mate 10 will retail at €699, wheras the Pro and Porsche Design will retail at €799 and €1,399 respectively.
