If the recurring leaks, rumors and exposures of the upcoming Samsung S-series flaships are taken as reference. Samsunghas focused on improving under the hood components and software department rather than pushing the design boundaries even further. That said, a newly budded rumor suggests a possibility of Samsung incorporating 3D Emoji’s on the Galaxy S9/S9+ to further enhance the software experience.
Apparently, it seems the South Korean firm is leaving no stones unturned so as to enhance the user experience on its heavily customized skin. For that to achieve Samsung might be even ready to pull one of its born-rival, Apple’s – Animoji inspired emoticons. Well, there won’t be a need for giving an intro of the Animoji as Apple has given more than enough publicity and attention for it during the iPhone X launch.
Despite, for those who’re still unknown of the things happening on iOS world. The Animoji’s are basically 3D character emoji’s that are created based on user’s facial expression. The feature is powered by Apple’s powerful A11 bionic chipset for rendering a perfect emoji aping the user’s expression. And, the so-called 3D Emoji by Samsung should be the same feature but could be more advanced and prevailing than the Animoji’s.
In fact, this is not the first time Samsung “kanging” an iOS feature. Remember the popular Live Drawing feature that debuted on Galaxy Note 8 last year. It’s, perhaps inspired from the Live Messages feature that was present on Apple’s proprietary iMessage a long before. Only the difference is Samsung made the feature universal and more useful in daily messaging.
Samsung Live DrawingHowever, as every rumors take this also with considerable pinch of salt. Whether the 3D Emoji is a part or not of the Galaxy S9/S9+ will be revealed on 25th February, when the devices get unleashed.
A Samsung UK representative for the beta program replied to a curious S8 owner during a discussion hosted by the company’s Galaxy Beta Community service that the final update is expected to be ready by the end-of-January or early-February, 2018, which is more than six weeks away.
Typically when a manufacturer decides to offer a public beta, they provide an update, which is fairly stable and only needs a bit of testing to check for any underlying issues that might have been missed by the company. They release one or two beta versions before the stable version is rolled-out, but it seems Samsung is having a hard time fixing its Android 8.0 Oreo update. The company is already on the fourth public beta for the S8/ S8+, which was released earlier today, and they are still six weeks away from the stable release, meaning we would be seeing at least one or more public beta updates before the final version reaches the consumers.
Either Samsung released a fairly raw Oreo version as a public beta or they have been caught with their pants down with a number of underlying problems with the update. Whatever be the case, despite having Samsung’s flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S8/ S8+ owners will get the Oreo update almost six months after Google officially unveiled it.
There is no word on when the likes of Note 8 or other phones will get Oreo. Although Samsung has not officially revealed which of its Android devices will be getting the Oreo update, a leaked list did give us an idea about which Samsung phones and tablets can expect to see Android 8.0. The Samsung Galaxy S9 phones will reportedly keep the same design as the Galaxy S8 phones.Update (Dec 15): A report originating from South Korea is now suggesting that Samsung will announce the S9 and S9+ at the Mobile World Congress 2018. The company will most likely host a press event a day before the opening on the MWC 2018 – February 25 – to unveil the flagship smartphones. The date mentioned in the Korean report is most likely a typo. Update (Dec 8): It seems VentureBeat was wrong and we will not be seeing the S9 or S9+ at the CES 2018. You can read more in my full report here. Earlier (Nov 23): The South Korean tech giant is reportedly planning to reveal the next Galaxy S-series smartphones earlier than usual. According to VentureBeat, the company will show off the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ phones at the CES trade fair in Las Vegas. The CES is scheduled from January 9 to January 12 next year.
The VentureBeat report however adds that the actual launch of the S9 models will still happen in March, like this year’s Galaxy S8 models. It is unclear how many details of its upcoming flagship smartphone, Samsung will share at the CES event.
Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ expected features & specifications
The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be sporting an identical design to their predecessors Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. It is the internal components that will be mainly different in the upcoming smartphones.
VentureBeat notes that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ are codenamed Star 1 and Star 2 respectively. While the S9 phone will carry the model number SM-G960 and a 5.8-inch curved-edge Super AMOLED Infinity display, the S9+ phone will use model number SM-G965 with 6.2-inch curved-edge Super AMOLED Infinity display.
Like the most previous years, the upcoming Galaxy S-series phones will use Qualcomm’s flagship smartphone processor for 2018 in some markets and Samsung’s own flagship Exynos model in the other markets. The exact processor names are unconfirmed at this point, but some reports indicate that Snapdragon 845 is going to the moniker of the Qualcomm chip.
Unlike the S8 and S8+ phones, where are nearly identical apart from the display changes, the S9 and S9+ will be significantly different. Samsung has reportedly decided to go the Apple way and will be putting more RAM in the plus model. It will also use rear dual-camera setup in the plus version and the non-plus version will have a single-sensor setup on the back.
Among other rumoured specifications, the S9 phones will keep the 3.5mm audio jack and come with AKG stereo speakers and a fingerprint sensor.
After a lot complaints about its current placement of fingerprint sensor, Samsung is changing it in the S9 phones. The rear elements will be placed vertically with fingerprint sensor on the bottom of the placement.
Lastly, the company will also introduce a backward compatible DeX docking station with the Galaxy S9 smartphones. To remind you DeX allows the users to connect their phone to a monitor and keyboard/ mouse and use their phone as a computer.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are the ones to receive Android 8.0 Oreo beta update. A release date isn’t confirmed but it is said that very soon the firmware version for the update will be available. Galaxy S8 Oreo beta update is in the works and its beta is on the verge of rollout.
The first Oreo beta for Galaxy S8 comes with all new features and improvements. The beta update has the firmware version G950USQU1ZQJB with almost a very few changes in the UI. However, a lot of Oreo features are present, along with the Samsung extras. Not much is known about battery life, but Nougat features such as split screen are present. With the beta update, Samsung Experience UI (version is 9.0) is definitely better in terms of smoothness.
The touch latency is improved, the Notification Dots feature is renamed to App Badge icons and Adaptive Icons are there for rescue. Talking more about the update, it brings redesigned Settings, faster search and more. Now you can invoke Google Assistant with ‘OK Google’ while the device is charging. The App pairs feature from Note 8, the Camera app is slightly redesigned, and some small changes here and there are also made.
Samsung is currently working on several devices which includes the upcoming foldable screen smartphones sometimes even referred as Galaxy X. But, before that Samsung will launching their next flagship which is none other than Galaxy S9 duo, the successor to this year’s Galaxy S8 duo. Recently, the dual sim variants of Galaxy S9 / S9+ get listed on FCC as well as on Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
According to the listing, the phone with model number SM-G9608 is a dual sim variant of Galaxy S9 for Taiwan. Whereas the ones with model numbers SM-G9600 and SM-G9650 are the dual sim variants of Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ for China respectively. As of now, these three variants are currently being tested in China.
Rumours say that the Galaxy S9 duo will come with dual VoLTE support. Which means both the sims slots can support 4G at the same time instead of 2G / 3G in the secondary slot. This will be possible due to the newly announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 which will be powering these devices. However, it is not sure whether the Exynos version will have such feature.
Samsung’s been launching dual sim variants of their flagships in many developing countries since many years. This year, they even brought the dual sim variants to Europe but still it didn’t reach USA yet. Only time will tell whether they will be launching dual sim variants of Galaxy S9 / S9+ in USA.
