What is Project Treble?

Android 8.0 Oreo was officially launched in August of 2017. Though it comes with many new features, the most notable one is ‘Project Treble’. Let us deep dive in this article to know about Project Treble, supported devices and its future.

Project Treble

What is Project Treble in Detail

This is what Google has to say,
Project Treble, a major re-architect of the Android OS framework designed to make it easier, faster, and less costly for manufacturers to update devices to a new version of Android. Treble is for all new devices launching with Android 8.0 and beyond.
In a nutshell, Project Treble allows ROM developers to update their software to newer Android version easily.

Before Project Treble
Before Project Treble, i.e. in Android Nougat and earlier versions, the software had a single unified layer consisting of both Android Framework and Vendor implementation. The first one contains all Android Operating System related things and the latter one contains implementations made by hardware vendors, i.e SoC manufacturers to support the Android system. Thus, whenever new Android version arrives, the developers had to update the Android framework as well as rework the vendor implementation to support that software. It was really a tedious work and thus updates took more time to reach the end users.

Project Treble
Project Treble compatible smartphones will have two separate layers for both Android Framework and Vendor implementation. Thus, when a new Android version arrives, the developers just have to update their Android framework. Thus, Project Treble makes the update task easier and faster, so end user can enjoy the latest version of Android quicker than before.

Project Treble Supported Devices

As of now, Project Treble is supported by some handful of devices running Android Oreo or even Nougat in some cases. The list includes Google’s Pixel smartphones both first and second generations, Huawei’s Mate 9 series, Mate 10 series, Honor 9, Honor 8 Pro and Sony’s Xperia XZ1 as well as XZ1 Compact. Sadly, though OnePlus, Nokia updated their flagships to Android Oreo, they don’t support Project Treble. However, it will be supported by almost all smartphone launching with Android Oreo out of the box from next year.

Future of Project Treble

Project Treble has a wonderful future ahead especially in Custom ROM community. Developers can have a one unified build for multiple devices which support Project Treble. A developer has already booted a same Android 8.0 AOSP build on multiple devices from different OEMs as well as different SoC. The smartphones he tested were Huawei Mate 9, Honor 8 Pro, Honor 9, Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact and Essential Phone.
Now, that’s really a breakthrough. Which clearly means in the future, most of the Custom ROMs will have the same build for multiple smartphones.

Conclusion

Though Project Treble makes the task of updating the smartphones easier, it is still in the hands of OEMs to deliver the updates faster. But, the Custom ROM community will bloom more with the help of Project Treble for sure.
So, what are your thoughts on Project Treble ? Will it be successful and popular among all the smartphones from different OEMs ? Let us know in the comment section below.

Posted: 06 Dec 2017 11:11 AM PST

EMUI 8.0 was first announced with the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro which was launched while back in October. The great thing about EMUI 8.0 is that it is based on Android 8.0 Oreo. And now, it is available for Mate 9, Mate 9 Pro and Mate 9 Porsche Edition in China.

However, the update is not available as OTA. If you are interested in this new version of EMUI, you will have to download it from the official site. Then, install it manually via PC. Though it is a tedious work, but worth doing it as the update brings lots of new features and functionalities.
The new features include dynamic wallpapers, PC mode which enables to convert your smartphone into desktop PC via USB cable (even mouse and keyboard can be connected via Bluetooth), smart split screen, some AI features which allocates resources to mostly used apps, Picture in Picture mode and other Android Oreo features.
The update is available for the following Mate 9 variants in China:
  • Mate 9 MHA-AL00
  • Mate 9 Full Netcom Version MHA-TL00
  • Mate 9 Pro Full Netcom Version LON-AL00
  • Mate 9 Porsche Edition
We hope, soon it will be made available in other countries also.

After downloading the Beta FUT app, you can sign in with your Huawei ID and start waiting for the over-the-air (OTA) Android 8.0 beta release. The application also includes feedback option for any bugs or issues that you might encounter while testing the Oreo beta. Huaweiblog.de reports that the beta update seems to be only showing up for Mate 9 users with MHA-L29C432B194 firmware version right now. If you don’t have the same version, you are out of luck.

Update (Dec 7): Less than two months after beginning the beta test of the Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro Oreo updates, Huawei has released the final update for both phones in China. The update is now available over-the-air (OTA) to the phones and will reach all Chinese consumers over the coming days.
In addition to the Oreo goodies, the update also bring EMUI version 8.0 B334 to both phones. The new EMUI version packs a new digital assistant and a lot more.
Since the Chinese ROM is slightly different from the international ROM (lack of Google apps and more) for these phones, it might take a few more days for the international version to get the Android 8.0 update. I will update this report as and when I hear about the roll-out. (via)

Earlier (Oct 9): Huawei launches Android Oreo update beta program for Mate 9

Huawei has quietly opened the beta testing program for Mate 9 Oreo update for the interested consumers. The beta program is currently live and will run until November 3. It and can be joined by downloading the Beta Friendly User Test (FUT) app from Huawei website. The company is only looking for 250 volunteers, so if you want to test the update, you have to be quick.
At this time, the Chinese giant seems to be only supporting the Mate 9 for this Oreo beta program, but the number of devices might increase in the coming months as the company prepares to upgrade more devices to Android 8.0.

It is important to note here that beta updates are not meant for everyone and include unfinished software. So, only join the beta test if you know what you are doing.
To remind you, Android Oreo includes a number of improvements and new features including improved boot time, picture-in-picture support, autofill for passwords, notification dots and Wi-Fi Assistant.
