Google Maps adds step-by-step directions in transit navigation

After a brief stint in 2011, the step-by-step transit navigation is back in Google Maps. This new navigation mode will offer the same kind of user-friendly navigation that you have come to expect from car, bike or walking directions.

According to Google, the step-by-step directions in transit navigation are rolling out now to Google Maps for Android users globally. So, the next time you are searching for transit directions, Google will show a new start button to begin navigation. This navigation will track your location using GPS and notify you when you are about to reach your transit stop. It is especially useful when you are new to a city. The usage of GPS also means that it will work best when you are using above ground transit modes.
In addition to informing you about directions, the transit navigation also keeps you on track with departure times and ETAs.
The step-by-step directions in transit navigation come just over ten days after Google had added two-wheeler directions in the Maps for the motorcycle users.

Gboard gets Hinglish-style support for 19 more Indian languages

In other Google apps news, the company’s Android keyboard app Gboard has gotten a new update in the Play Store and it brings a numbers of new features including a few for the Indian users. As per the changelog published in the Play Store, the new Gboard version includes Hinglish-style support for 19 more Indian languages as well as support for 20 new languages like Awadhi, Bambara, Bundeli, Emilian-Romagnol, Fulani, Gilaki, Hiligaynon, Jamaican Patois, Kumaoni, Lambadi, Lombard, Madurese, Minangkabau, Mazanderani, Nahuatl, Neapolitan, Norwegian (Nynorsk), Piedmontese, Sadri, Santali (Devanagari and Bengali), Sicilian, Sylheti, Venetian, and Zazaki.
This is not all, the keyboard now packs fast delete support and suggestions in the URL fields.
This update comes just over two weeks after Google had added handwriting support in Gboard.

Google Street View adds Video Mode in latest Version

Google is rolling out an update to its Street View app with new Video Mode. This video mode feature is only available if you’re a Street View Trusted Photographer or a level 6+ Local guide.

In Google Street view Video mode you can record the street view. While you’re on a bike, or walking after recording you can watch the preview in 360 immersive videos before publishing them. You also have the ability to view the videos on the map as a track that shows the total distance you covered.

Along with these features a there are some bugs fixes, stability improvements and user interface improvements. To use these features you should be on latest Google Street view app. Download it from play store.

For a reminder, In Google Street View users can view Photosphere galleries from across the world. Moreover,they can even upload their own panorama and Photosphere shots instantly to Google Maps. The app is mostly a map. As you move around, it automatically filters results, showing you photospheres from near where you are.

Google Maps gets a visual upgrade

In order to better serve the consumers’ needs in the changing usability patters, Google has unveiled a visual revamp of its Maps offering. The upgraded Google Maps features new colour schemes, new iconography and overall enhanced maps in general. “The world is an ever-evolving place. And as it changes, Google Maps changes with it. We’re updating Google Maps with a new look that better reflects your world, right now,” wrote Liz Hunt, Product Manager, Google Maps, in a blog post In this blog post, she revealed that Google Maps will now feature improved driving, navigation, transit and explore maps to highlight what it believes might be relevant to its users at a given time. So, it will highlight petrol pumps during navigation or train/ metro stations during your daily commute and so on. The company has also tweaked the Maps colour scheme and revamped the icons to make it easier for the consumers to find what they are looking for. The company has given specific colours to different categories of points of interests. Like, the food and drink-related places will have an orange colour icon and outdoor-related POIs will have a green icon and so on. Check out the new icons at the end of the report to get an idea of what to expect from Google Maps now. According to the company, the changes will be rolled out to Maps and other Google products that use maps over the coming weeks. The same will also be available in third-party apps and websites that use Google Maps APIs in the coming months. The revamped Google Maps comes just days after the company had started showing wait times for restaurants in Google Maps and Search. Update: Google has now officially revealed the Google Go app. The application will come pre-installed on devices with Android Oreo (Go Edition). Others can install it directly from Google Play.

Earlier: Google on Tuesday launched a new app called ‘Google Go’ in the Play Store. It is a lightweight app meant to provide key search features to the Android users with slow data networks or low-powered devices.

Here are the key highlights of the Android Oreo (Go Edition)

• Optimised operating system with better app launch times, data management features and security benefits
• Pre-launched Go-branded Google apps, which are built keeping in mind the limitations of low-end smartphones. Some of these apps are Google Go, Files Go, YouTube Go, Maps Go and Assistant Go.
• Improved Google Play Store: The Android Go devices come with a new version of Play Store, which not only provides access to all the Android apps available in the store, but highlights the applications that will provide better experience on an entry-level phone.
• Reduced overall footprint of the operating system and pre-installed apps
• Google’s data saver features turned on by default
• Based on Android 8.1

I am expecting an official announcement later today at the big Google India event, but the app is already available for download. (see update on top)
“Get answers quickly and reliably with Google Go, even on slow connections and smartphones with low space. At 5MB in size, it’s speedy to download and get started,” Google writes in the Play Store description.
Google Go is an updated version of the Search Lite app, which was being tested by the company in Indonesia earlier this year. With the latest launch, Google now has a total three apps including the Files Go and YouTube Go, which are targeted to the consumers in developing markets with access to poor networks.

Google Go features

Coming to the new Google Go app, it offers many of the key features, which you will find in the main Google app like web search, voice search, and image search, as well as quick access to other Google properties like YouTube and Maps. The app also includes access to Translate and GIF search. Additionally, the Google Go app acts an app drawer for popular Android apps, which can be triggered from within the app itself. In case a listed app is not installed on the user’s phone, Google Go opens the mobile web version.
