 In a bid to target the budget conscious first time smartphone consumers, Zen Mobiles has released the new Admire Unity Android phone in the Indian market. It carries a price-tag of INR 5,099 and will go on sale beginning November 10.
To tap the entry-level smartphone users, who are not necessarily great at English, the Zen Admire Unity supports multiple Indian regional languages. The phone also includes 4G VoLTE for the modern connectivity needs and comes pre-loaded with a number of applications, so you don’t have to rush to Play Store immediately after getting your new smartphone. You will be getting pre-installed apps like Prime Video, Vistoso, Go2Pay, and Chillx.
The Zen Admire Unity is powered by 1.3GHz quad-core processor and runs on Android 7.0 Nougat. It sports a 5-inch display with 854x480p FWVGA resolution and packs a 2300 mAh battery. Additionally, the phone comes with 5MP rear camera with LED flash, 2MP selfie camera and dua-SIM support. There is 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot as well on the Zen Admire Unity. “With Admire Unity, we have unveiled our latest offering, coupled with best features and stunning design. Continuing with our focus on capturing the first time smartphone users, we are constantly innovating and working towards creating an industry benchmark to bring in the next big evolution in the smartphone industry for day to day phone transactions, internet usage and online content consumption,” said Deepesh Gupta, CEO, Zen Mobiles, in a statement. According to Zen Mobiles, the Admire Unity has been made in India and comes with replacement offers, who makes sure that if your faulty Admire Unity is not repaired by the company in 15 days, you will get a replacement phone. Zen Mobiles releases Admire Unity for first-time smartphone buyers

 According to Airtel, the buyers of these two phones will need to make 36 continuous monthly recharges of the INR 169 pack from Airtel. They will get a cash refund of INR 500 after 18 months and another INR 1000 after 36 months, taking the total cash benefit to INR 1500. If they don’t want to get the INR 169 pack, the customers can go for any other recharge, given recharges worth INR 3000 are done within the first 18 months to get the first cashback and another INR 3000 over the next 18 months for the second cashback. The Karbonn A1 Indian is being sold for INR 3299 and the A41 Power for INR 3349. Both phones will be available on Amazon India as well as in the open market. A1 Indian and A41 Power phones aren’t the first 4G Karbonn smartphones to be offered as a part of Airtel’s ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative. Last month, Airtel and Karbonn had launched the A40 Indian as the first phone in the ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ lineup. According to Airtel, A40 Indian was a big success and it was fully sold-out in the first month of launch. “We are delighted to partner with Airtel. The immense response that we got for us our offer with Airtel helped us add 70% new feature phone users to our existing portfolio. We feel that this partnership will be even more fruitful as it brings more competitively priced 4G smartphones to the market, especially with Amazon India on board,” said Pardeep Jain, MD, Karbonn Mobiles, in a statement. OnePlus 5 and 5T will get Android 8.0 Oreo update in 2018

 At the OnePlus 5T launch event earlier today, OnePlus team revealed that they will roll-out the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the OnePlus 5 and 5T smartphones in 2018. The Oreo update open beta will be available later this month for OnePlus 5 and in late-December for the 5T. Both OnePlus 5 and 5T currently run on Android 7.1 Nougat-based OxygenOS and the OnePlus 5 will be the first of the two to get the final Oreo update in early-2018. Among other phones from the company, the OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones are going through the Oreo beta-testing these days. Both these phones should ideally get the Oreo update before the end of this year, but the company hasn’t promised a clear timeline at this point as a lot will depend on how the beta performs. Made official in August this year, Oreo isn’t a major revamp of the Android operating system, but it does bring a number of new features. Some of these features are Autofill for passwords, new emojis, performance enhancements, and improved boot times. Additionally, Oreo comes with picture-in-picture support, notification dots, integrated printing support, and Wi-Fi Assistant. OnePlus also announced that it is adding a new OnePlus Switch feature in OxygenOS to make to easier for the consumers coming from other brands to switch to OnePlus devices. The Switch app will also support iOS devices. The feature will be rolled-out in the coming weeks. In related news, OnePlus has finally announced the pricing and availability details of the 5T, which will start at $499/ INR 32,999. The sales open November 21 in US, Europe and India. Airtel adds Intex 4G phones to its ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative

“We are really pleased to see the continued positive response to our ‘Mera Pehla Smartphone’ initiative from customers as well as smartphone manufacturers. We are delighted to have Intex on board as a partner and their brand familiarity plus distribution reach will add to our affordable smartphone proposition and offer more choice to our customers,” said Ajai Puri, Chief Operating Officer (India and South Asia), Bharti Airtel, in a statement.
The three Intex phones, which will be eligible for Mera Pehla Smartphone offer, are Aqua Lions N1, Aqua A4 and Aqua S3. According to Airtel, the buyers of these 4G phones will be able to claim cashback of INR 15000 if they go for the INR 169/ month prepaid plan for 36 months or do recharges worth INR 3000 within the first 18 months of purchase (to claim the first cashback of INR 500) and another INR 3000 over the next 18 months (to claim the second cashback of INR 1000).

Google launches Android Oreo Go edition for low-end phones

Google’s made a number of tweaks since announcing Android Go back at I/O in May. The lightweight version is finally ready to launch, albeit with a slightly altered name. The OS is launching with the release of Android 8.1, now carrying the decidedly less catchy Android Oreo (Go edition) title.
As per the new name, the Go version isn’t an altogether different operating system than the primary version of Android. In fact, in a number of ways, the software types are likely indistinguishable, and Google’s devoting a team to assuring that the Go edition gets updated and released on more or less the same schedule as its standard counterpart.
Google made the announcement this evening at an event in India — a major potential market for the new version of the OS. As the company notes in a recent blog post, there are currently more Android users in India than the U.S., making it a huge market, along with other developing countries. A number of companies like Mozilla and Nokia have worked to address a rapidly expanding audience in these areas, but none are better positioned than Google.
With more than two billion activated Android devices in the world, the mobile operating system already has a strong footprint. Go Edition is an attempt to give users the best possible Android experience, in spite of hardware limitations. The Oreo configuration is designed specifically for devices with between 512MB and 1GB of RAM.
According to Google, that comes with all sorts of benefits for the end user, including 30 percent faster startup time and an optimization of storage space, by up to 2x. The latter is accomplished, in part, by the inclusion of a number of optimized Go apps. It’s a pretty long list, including Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, Gboard, Chrome and Files Go, a new file management app. There’s also a Go version of the Play store, which specializes in lightweight apps.
All in all, the changes are relatively minimal. There are a few key things, including recent previews and multi-users settings, but it ultimately shouldn’t be too major a step down from the full Android, for the most part. Google’s also not limiting availability of the software to any specific region. Go edition will be available globally starting tomorrow. Compatible devices should start shipping early next year.
At Google I/O in May of this year, Google promised a version of Android custom-designed for low-end devices. Today, “Android Go (Oreo edition)” is being made available for device manufacturers and developers. That doesn’t mean it’s available to users yet — but presumably that’ll happen in fairly short order.
The premise behind Android Go is pretty simple. It’s a build of Android Oreo that is designed to run better on phones with either 512MB or 1GB of RAM. By comparison, the Pixel 2 (like most flagships) has 4GB of RAM, while the iPhone X has 3GB and the Galaxy Note 8 has a whopping 6GB.
Making the same operating system work on both flagships and the cheapest of cheap phones is a challenge, but it’s one Google says it’s overcome. Go edition is not meant to be a “fork” of Android Oreo so much as a variant that a manufacturer can just set by ticking off a configuration flag.
Setting those configs does a few things. It sets the phone up to use the “Go” versions of a handful of Google apps — including the main Google app, Google Assistant, Google Maps, Gmail, and so on. Some of those apps, like YouTube Go, have special features for downloading stuff over Wi-Fi, In other cases, the “Go” versions are radically smaller than their regular variants. The smaller apps and slimmer OS can as much as halve the amount of storage that’s taken up by default on a brand new phone.

There are also “performance and storage improvements” in the Go edition of Oreo — and you’d think that you’d want that for every Android phone. But in this case, that’s not necessarily true; optimizing an app to take up less storage can also mean it takes a little longer to launch. On phones where storage is at a premium, you optimize for that. On most high-end phones, however, you’d rather get those milliseconds back.
Google is also piling on a bunch of other data-saving features turned on out of the box. So in Chrome, everything will get run through a Google server that reduces file sizes before it gets delivered to your phone. There’s also the new Datally app for tracking where you data went.
Android Go is distinct and different from Android One, by the way. Both are intended to raise the quality of low-end devices, but from different directions. One is a system where Google partners directly with the manufacturer to decide what goes on the phone and keep it up to date (sort of like the Nexus ecosystem). One used to strictly be a low-end play, but lately it’s been creeping up the price scale with the release of the Moto X4 on Project Fi in the US.
Android Go, by comparison, is a full release of Android available from the Android Open Source Project for any manufacturer to use. However, it’s pretty important to note that much (if not most) of what makes the Go edition special comes from Google’s own apps. So it’s not totally clear how much impact we’ll actually see in areas where Google’s apps aren't available — that is to say, China.
Google tells me that, going forward, the “Go edition” of future Android releases won’t be quite so delayed compared to the full ones. For now, though, the Go edition of Oreo is available for manufacturers to start using, which should mean we'll see it on new devices soon.
Chances are the first phones to use it will be launched in India — Google notes that it has more users there than it does in the US now, after all. Google also points out that this release comes “alongside” the release of Android 8.1, which should be available “tomorrow” (but more likely today, depending on your time zone).
