Google Maps Go app now available in Play Store

When I wrote about the Android Oreo (Go Edition) launch, I told you guys about Google’s plans to release Go editions of its popular Android applications, which will be developed keeping in mind the entry-level smartphones. The company released the Files Go, YouTube Go and Google Go before the Oreo (Go Edition) announcement and now the Maps Go app has appeared in the Play Store.

“Google Maps Go, the lighter version of the original Google Maps app, is designed to run smoothly on devices with limited memory and on unreliable networks without compromising speed,” write Google in the Play Store description of the app.
While these Go-branded applications are primarily meant for the Android Go smartphones, the likes of Files Go and YouTube Go have been available to the most Android users, but the Maps Go doesn’t seem to be compatible with any devices at this point. One of possible reasons for that could be that it is just a progressive web app (PWA) at this moment, which could be easily accessed using this URL found by the folks at Android Police. If you want to try this Maps Go PWA, open the link in a new Chrome window.
The feature-set of the Maps Go is pretty decent. It can show maps, give you directions, search for places, show different layers, share your location, show real-time traffic and more. As per the Google Play listing, it is available in over 70 languages and houses maps for over 200 countries and territories.
After the Maps Go, only Assistant Go and Gmail Go apps are left to be released from Go edition portfolio. It is likely that we will see a PWA for Gmail Go as well, but Assistant Go is more likely to be a native app.

Update: Google has now officially revealed the Google Go app. The application will come pre-installed on devices with Android Oreo (Go Edition). Others can install it directly from Google Play.

Earlier: Google on Tuesday launched a new app called ‘Google Go’ in the Play Store. It is a lightweight app meant to provide key search features to the Android users with slow data networks or low-powered devices.

Here are the key highlights of the Android Oreo (Go Edition)

Optimised operating system with better app launch times, data management features and security benefits
Pre-launched Go-branded Google apps, which are built keeping in mind the limitations of low-end smartphones. Some of these apps are Google Go, Files Go, YouTube Go, Maps Go and Assistant Go.
Improved Google Play Store: The Android Go devices come with a new version of Play Store, which not only provides access to all the Android apps available in the store, but highlights the applications that will provide better experience on an entry-level phone.
Reduced overall footprint of the operating system and pre-installed apps
Google’s data saver features turned on by default
Based on Android 8.1

I am expecting an official announcement later today at the big Google India event, but the app is already available for download. (see update on top)
“Get answers quickly and reliably with Google Go, even on slow connections and smartphones with low space. At 5MB in size, it’s speedy to download and get started,” Google writes in the Play Store description.
Google Go is an updated version of the Search Lite app, which was being tested by the company in Indonesia earlier this year. With the latest launch, Google now has a total three apps including the Files Go and YouTube Go, which are targeted to the consumers in developing markets with access to poor networks.

Coming to the new Google Go app, it offers many of the key features, which you will find in the main Google app like web search, voice search, and image search, as well as quick access to other Google properties like YouTube and Maps. The app also includes access to Translate and GIF search. Additionally, the Google Go app acts an app drawer for popular Android apps, which can be triggered from within the app itself. In case a listed app is not installed on the user’s phone, Google Go opens the mobile web version.

Top five announcements from Google for India event

The search giant Google on Tuesday held a press event in New Delhi, where the company launched a number of new products for the Indian market. The company also showcased several upcoming features in the existing products, which will help the consumers in the country.
In this report, I will recap the major announcements made during the event.

Android Oreo (Go Edition)

Starting with the biggest – Android Oreo (Go Edition). After over six months of initially talking about the Android Go initiative at the I/O developer conference earlier this year, Google revealed that it is finally ready. The first version of the Android Go will be called Android Oreo (Go Edition) and it will be available later today as a part of the Android 8.1 release. Go-branded light versions of Google apps

Over the last few months, we saw a few apps from Google that carried the Go moniker like Files Go or YouTube Go. Today, Google officially introduced all these apps and revealed that these are primarily meant for the Android Go platform and will come pre-installed on the devices running on Android Oreo (Go Edition). However, the normal consumers will also be able to install them from the Play Store, but the country-wise availability is unclear at this point. We do know that all of them will be available to the Indian users. These apps are Files Go, Google Go, Assistant Go, YouTube Go, and Maps Go.

Actions on Google Assistant & Assistant on JioPhone

Google Assistant is finally getting the third-party integration in India. Like the skills on Amazon Alexa, you will be able to use actions on Google Assistant to interact with services like the BookMyShow Goibibo, SBI and more.
Additionally, Google also revealed that the Assistant is coming to JioPhone. It will be a special version of Google Assistant, which will support Hindi and English languages.

Two wheeler mode in Google Maps

The company has also made the arrival of the two-wheeler mode in Google Maps official. It is currently available in India and will reach other markets over the coming months. You can read more about it in Google Maps Two Weeler Mode.

Bill payment support in Tez

Google’s UPI app Tez will get the bill payment support in the coming weeks. The company demoed the feature on the stage at the event and it seems pretty simple. Just add the biller and Tez will then show if you have any pending bills and then you can pay them from your connected bank account.
More than 70 billers will be supported, including utilities and direct-to-home service providers, revealed Google.

Google is busy at the end of the year 2017 with many launches and announcements. The search giant is rolling out the latest version of Android, i.e. Android 8.1 Oreo starting today. It doesn’t end here, they even launched Android Oreo Go Edition for entry level smartphones with a plethora of Go apps by Google.

From those Go apps, some of them are already available as beta version as well as stable version. And today Google also launched the Google Go as an early access app. You can download the APK from the link provided at the end of the post or install it from the Play Store.

Google says that the Google Go app is a fast, easy and fun way to search. The app weighs less than 5MB which is great and offers almost all the functionalities as the regular Google app. Google says that the search results are optimized to save up to 40 per cent data. Also, the UI is user friendly with tap first approach.

Other features include direct access to the installed apps on your smartphones and secondary language. Users can set their regional language as their secondary language for searches. Google launches Android Oreo (Go Edition) for low end smartphones

Google announced the Android Go programme earlier this year at the Google I/O conference 2017. It is a variant of Android Operating System specially built for entry level smartphones with low internals. Today, Google officially launches the Android Oreo Go Edition along with Android 8.1 release.

This is an initiative by Google to enable people in the developing countries to access smartphones with better software experience. According to Google, the Android Oreo Go Edition is designed to run on smartphones with 1GB or 512MB RAM.
The average app will be 15 per cent faster on low end smartphones running Android Oreo Go Edition. This is possible due to the Go apps that will come pre installed on these devices. The list includes Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, Gboard, Google Play, Chrome, Files Go and Datally.

Operating System: Performance and storage improvements to the OS with data management features and security benefits built-in.

Google Apps: A new set of Google apps, designed to be lighter and relevant to the unique needs of people who are coming online for the first time.

Google Play Store: A tuned version of the Google Play Store that allows you to download any app, but also highlights the apps designed to work best on your device.

Moreover, these apps will reduce the storage space occupied by the system, hence users will get more memory for their personal use. It doesn’t end here, Play Store will recommend the best apps suitable for these entry level devices. Such as the now popular lite apps from many developers.
The Android Oreo Go Edition will be released along with the Android 8.1 release today. Thus, OEMs will be able to develop ROMs for their smartphones starting today and these phones might be start shipping early next year.
