Nokia 8 getting Android 8.1 beta update

After a successful roll-out of the Android 8.0 Oreo update in November last year for the Nokia 8 smartphone, HMD Global has released the beta of the Android 8.1 update for the phone. According to the company, the beta update is now available and can be installed by joining the Nokia beta labs.
If you are already a member of the Nokia beta labs, your phone will automatically receive the Android 8.1 beta OTA update notification.
“Be our guest as we serve Android Oreo 8.1 beta for Nokia 8. Updating your device today will enable a host of new features. And most importantly – the hamburger emoji fix with cheese now on top of the patty,” wrote Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global, in a tweet.
Last line of Juho’s statement takes a dig at the Android hamburger emoji episode, when someone pointed to Google CEO Sundar Pichai that the hamburger emoji on Android has cheese below the patty rather than on top of the patty. Pichai had replied that he will drop everything else and get right on that. The emoji fix was one of the changes introduced in Android 8.1 release.
Android 8.1 Oreo was announced in December, 2017 and includes a number of new APIs and other improvements. Among the consumer-facing changes, the update brings settings revamp, quick settings update, notification shade changes, final Oreo easter egg, and more. Nokia 8 was the first Nokia phone to get Android 8.0 and now, it seems to be all set to become the first Nokia to get Android 8.1 as well. The company has said that Nokia 2 will directly jump to Android 8.1 and the phone could be next in line to get the 8.1 update after Nokia 8. Among other Nokia Oreo updates, the company has already released the update for Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 phones. Nokia 6 (2017) and Nokia 5 are currently undergoing the beta testing and should be getting the final update soon.

Nokia 5 getting Android 8.0 Oreo beta update

After a successful Android 8.0 roll-out for the Nokia 8 smartphone, HMD Global has now set it sights on the Nokia 5 phone. The company on Tuesday announced that it is now rolling out the public beta of the Oreo update for the Nokia 5 phone owners, who have signed up for Nokia phone beta labs. If you want to try out this update on your Nokia 5, head over to this link to sign up for the beta updates. It is important to note here that beta update aren’t meant for everyone as they tend to include bugs and other issues. The Android 8.0 Oreo beta for the Nokia 5 carries the version 5.140 and includes the December Android security patches as well as the usual Oreo goodies. You can expect to see Notifications dots, picture-in-picture support, autofill for passwords, faster boot times and more. To remind you, Nokia 5 was originally unveiled the Mobile World Congress earlier this year with Android Nougat on-board. It features a 5.2-inch IPS HD screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor and 3000 mAh battery. According to HMD Global, the Oreo beta will also be released for the Nokia 6 smartphone soon. So, if you own a Nokia 6, sign up for the Nokia phone beta labs to get the update as soon as it is released. To remind you, HMD Global has already confirmed that it will be providing the Android Oreo and Android P update for all of its existing smartphones. In related news, two new Nokia-branded smartphones – TA-1062 and TA-1077 – have been spotted in China. No details are known at this point, but we are likely to see these phones at the rumoured January 19 China event of the company. Nokia 5 enters Beta Labs for Android Oreo, Nokia 6 will be next

Late October, Nokia introduced Beta Labs which allows users to taste beta Android Oreo on their Nokia smartphones. At first, it was made available for Nokia 8 which later also received the stable updatein November. While rolling out stable update for Nokia 8, Juho Sarvikas of HMD Global said Nokia 6 & 5 will be next in the line to get beta. The most notable ones are Picture in Picture mode, Notification Channels, Adaptive icons, smart auto fills and several other under the hood changes.
